Saving Lives and Property with New 'Green' Fire Retardant - Fire'z Off by RDR Technologies
Toxic chemicals from other fire retardants can be found in polar bears, but not in Fire'z Off.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, March 17, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Each year, fire fighters respond to more than 1.5 million fires. Each year, more than 16,000 people are injured and 3,000 people lose their lives. More than 100 fire fighters are killed in the line of duty. One Oklahoma company is working to bring those numbers down with a new 'green' product.
RDR Technologies is introducing a new plant-based flame retardant to builders and roofers in the south central US. 'Fire'z Off' is a completely 'green' product, non-toxic, biodegradable and eco-friendly. It can be used by builders and roofers to treat framing and roof decking to help reduce the risk of fire to commercial and residential buildings. It can be used on new construction as well as re-roofs.
'Fire'z Off' is an ASTM E84 approved product that replaces most of the highly toxic fire retardants that have been used for the past several decades. It has a flame spread index of 15 and a smoke development value of 25, making it a Class A rated fire retardant, the highest classification possible.
For those in the construction industry, Fire'z Off offers a unique opportunity to create a new revenue stream that will dramatically improve the safety of their customers. In the event of fire, wood and fabric treated with Fire'z Off slows the fire and dramatically reduces the amount of toxic smoke generated - the number one cause of deaths by fire.
A single five gallon pail is enough to treat the roof decking of most homes - about 2000-2500 square feet, at a cost of about thirty cents per square foot, labor included. Wood can even be pre-treated at the lumber yard.
Fire retardant wood has considerable financial benefits as well. Builders can work with the insurance companies to get extra discounts for using 'Superior Construction' materials - sometimes 15% or more. Homeowners can get extensions on 'new home discounts' and builders can even get lower Builders' Risk Insurance premiums because there is a substantial lessening of risk by fire. The entire treatment might even be paid for by the insurance companies.
In some parts of the country, Fire'z Off's two 'side benefits' may prove to be the most useful. Treated wood is extremely resistant to both mold and termites.
Fire retardants have come under intense scrutiny recently because of the health risks associated with exposure to the toxic chemicals. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PBDE's, are commonly used as fire retardants as well as in manufacturing of building materials, electronics, furnishings, plastics and textiles. But PBDE's accumulate in the body and are not passed through as waste. They have been shown to cause problems with the nervous system, kidney function, brain development and hormone production. According to the Cousteau Society, PBDE's have become so pervasive, they have even been found in polar bears in the Arctic Circle.
Fire'z Off contains no PBDE's or other volatile organic compounds. Because it is so safe, cumbersome masks and respirators are not needed when applying Fire'z Off. It can be applied with an airless sprayer, common garden sprayer or even a squirt bottle.
