Detroit School Collects Old Cell Phones, Raises Funds for the Elderly
The Detroit Country Day Junior School has teamed up with Pace Butler Corporation of Edmond, Okla., cell phone recycling giant, to raise funds for assisted living community.
/Oklahoma News Articles/ - BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MI, December 29, 2007 -- Many homes in America have at least one or two old cell phones lying in a drawer or closet somewhere, doing nothing but collecting dust. Many people might see these old phones as trash, but one organization has turned them into treasure.
The Detroit Country Day Junior School is collecting used and unwanted cell phones to raise money for the Grovecrest Assisted Living community in Pontiac. They have teamed up with Pace Butler Corporation of Edmond, Okla., a leader in the cell phone recycling industry. Pace Butler pays for the cell phones and donates them to shelters and other charitable causes, or they recycle them to keep them out of landfills.
Pace Butler pays for the shipping costs of the cell phones and then sends a check to the school within four business days after receiving them. There is no cost to the school, and Pace Butler even provides free collection boxes and advertising materials to help the school collect more phones.
The cell phone drive is part of Detroit Country Day School's Character Development program. "The children chose the Grovecrest Assisted Living community because it was local and they wanted to help the elderly," said Nancy Jenkins, head of the fine arts department in the Junior School and coordinator of the fundraiser. She said the school will be accepting cell phones from January 7-12, 2008.
The public is asked to drop off cell phones between these dates at the Junior School, 3600 Bradway Blvd., Bloomfield Hills, MI 48301. Cell phones may also be mailed to that address.
